Rural Transportation

In this day and age transportation is becoming a big problem for people with cost of fuel rising and just the everyday expense of owning a vehicle. Northeast Kentucky Community Action Agency strives to provide affordable and reliable transportation. We want everyone who utilizes our service to know that they can count on us to get them where they need to go.

Northeast Kentucky Community Action Agency has provided over one million rides for residents of Boyd, Carter, Elliott, Greenup, and Lawrence counties since its beginning in 1976. Transportation is available to the general public. Riders can count on courteous drivers and safe efficient transportation to school, work, senior citizen centers, adult and child care centers, medical facilities, and recreational destinations. Operating hours are as follows: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM-4:30 PM.

Intercity Bus Service
Northeast Kentucky Community Action Agency provides Intercity Bus Services for the following counties: Boyd, Carter, Elliott, Greenup, and Lawrence.

The Intercity Bus Service provides transportation to the general public. This service meets the intercity travel needs of residents and makes a connection between non-urbanized areas and larger regional public transportation operations.

Intercity Greyhound Bus–Connection
Northeast Kentucky Community Action Agency provides a feeder service for Greyhound Bus to the following Greyhound Bus stops: Ashland, KY. We also provide a feeder service through Federated Transportation of the Bluegrass out of Morehead, KY, to get to Lexington, KY to airport. To get this service all you will need to do is call and schedule 48 hours in advance.

A 24 hour notice is required for all scheduled rides. Rates are as follows:

In city limits: $1.00/stop
1-5 miles: $5.00/round trip
6-20 miles: $10.00/round trip
21-50 miles: $25.00/round trip
Over 50 miles: $1.00 per mile per round trip ($25 + $1 per mile over 50)

NKCAA operates a demand response transit service in Boyd, Carter, Elliott, Greenup and Lawrence counties. A 24 hour notice is required to schedule a trip. Money will be collected at time of service and correct change is required.

Intercity routes are available to larger cities for a cost. The cost depending on which city you want to go.

Transportation is also provided to VA hospitals for veterans at no charge to them. Veterans need to call and make appointment at least 72 hours in advance.

Bus Rules
Northeast may deny transportation for, but not limited to the following reasons:

  • Smoking in the vehicles
  • Eating and drinking is also prohibited in all NKCAA vehicles
  • Only certified service animals and guide dogs are allowed on NKCAA vehicles
  • Failure to wear seat belts (must be fastened at all times)
  • Leaving trash on bus
  • Firearms and weapons of any kind are prohibited
  • Abusive language or talk that interferes with the driver or other passengers
  • No drugs or alcohol
  • Refusal to pay for service
  • Repeated failure of cancellation notification or no-show

Transportation is funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation and is passed through the Commonwealth of Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Office of Transportation Delivery.
